4.9 Supporting people with additional needs to vote
Voting should be accessible to everyone, but the process isn’t always designed with all needs in mind. For some young people with additional needs, extra support or clearer information can make a real difference. A range of resources are available to help make voting more inclusive and easier to navigate.
You can find a wide range of accessible tools on DemocracyClassroom.com, including:
- Voter ID Phase 1 Film – A short, accessible film explaining what Voter ID is, and why it’s now required for some elections.
- Voting Passport – A printable resource that helps young people communicate the support they may need when voting.
- Local Election Practice Ballot Paper – A helpful tool to show what a real ballot paper might look like, reducing uncertainty on the day.
- My Vote, My Voice Easy Read Guide to Voter ID – A step-by-step guide explaining what ID is needed to vote and how to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate.
- My Vote, My Voice Resources website – a range of resources to support people with learning disabilities and autism to engage in voting.
- Voter ID Animation (BSL) – A short animated video in British Sign Language explaining voter ID.
These resources can help build confidence and make the voting process more accessible for young people with additional needs. More inclusive materials are available to explore at www.democracyclassroom.com.
