3.8 Supporting migrants to register
You may work with young people who will be unsure whether they’re eligible to vote, especially if they or their families have migrated to the UK.
If a young person isn’t sure whether they can vote register to vote, it’s important to support them to find out their eligibility.

Methods of support
If you're supporting young people from migrant backgrounds, use CanIVote.org.uk to help them check if they can vote. You'll need to know their age, nationality, where they live, and the type of election. The website will guide you from there.
CanIVote.org.uk lets you check voting eligibility by country (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland) and by type of election.
What to do if a young person isn’t eligible to vote
If you are working with young people who are unable to vote in an upcoming election, it is helpful to support them to consider other ways that they can participate and use their voice. Other ways to participate include:
- Writing to their local councillor, MP, or other elected representative if they have any issues they wish to raise.
- Attending community events.
- Joining a local social action group.
