3.4 Incorporating voter registration into activities

Picture representing our component titled: 3.4 voter reg drive image1.

Sometimes the most effective approach to support young people to register to vote, is to tag voter registration onto the end of an engaging political activity.

This could be:

  • A simple game or discussion activity that sparks curiosity about politics – see the At The Table Toolkit for examples designed for informal youth settings.
  • The Paper Bin Game, which specifically explores how different groups are more or less likely to be registered (see the Resource Highlight section of this module for a full explanation of how to deliver this activity).

Once young people are already thinking about politics or democracy, this is a natural moment to introduce voter registration. You can then:

  • Share a QR code or link to the voter registration site, and support them to register in the session.
  • Send follow-up messages via email, WhatsApp, or another platform.
  • Use posters with QR codes or links in your space to reinforce the action.

Considerations:

  • To register to vote, young people will need their national insurance number. When planning your session, you will need to remind young people in advance, to bring this with them.

Other resources available:

  • Template emails and a voter registration FAQ from Democracy Classroom.
  • Posters and flyers you can adapt from the Resource Roundup page.
